engine is actually a protection device rather than performance enhancement article. There are subtle differences in what you stated about octane and power enhancement. On a non-turbo, the engine will run at the maximum design power without knocking on a design gasoline and in this case 95 RON (87 AON). If a knock (detonation) is detected because of a lesser rated fuel, the spark is reduced and power is reduced but in no case does high octane fuel produce above design power. We could get into a long discussion to debate the merits of Octane and increasing vice decreasing but here is not the place. You are correct to a point on turbo powered cars which have the ability to increase the BMEP of the engine there octane can increase power by controlling the flame propogation within the engine.
