Ari is correct that the radiator fan can be tripped by either the coolant temp switch or the AC high pressure. However, fan control by the AC is determined strictly by pressure rather than load (if those are different things). AC pressure (esp. high side) and temperature are directly related. As temperature rises, ac pressure rises. The hotter it is out, the higher the pressure. Airflow across the condensor decreases high side pressure by removing heat from the AC system which decreases temperature, thus decreasing pressure. That is the reason that cooling fan function is critical to ac operation.

Also having a 93cs, here is what I have observed: When the AC is first turned on, the radiator fan will run for a minute or so and then shut off. Then as the high pressure rises above 250 psi, the radiator fan kicks in and brings the pressure down to around 175 - 185. This function is independent of the compressor cycling. AC pressure can also cause the radiator fan to run at high speed if it's really hot and the low speed is not decreasing the pressure adequately. For instance, on a really hot day, the fan will run continually on high speed at idle.

I think you have to separate, but related problems. First, your fan appears to work when ac pressure rises high enough. This tells me that the only thing that's not working with the fan is the coolant temp. switch. Next, you have an ac problem. If the guy pulled a vacuum and only put in one pound, something is wrong. If your fan was not working AT ALL, then one pound might be enough to drive the high side to the point where no more would appear needed. However, if the fan is working with the ac, then I think the ac guy just didn't put in enough 134a and you are having intermittent functioning of the ac depending on outside temperature. This is because when it is really hot out, the gas in the system will expand creating enough pressure to satisfy the low pressure switch. When the outside temp decreases, the gas contracts and there will not be enough pressure to get the compressor to come on.

My diagnosis of your problem is:

1. Your coolant temp switch has died.

2. Your ac tech is taking the drugs.
