It depends. Posted by Ari [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Can I drive with bad compressor?, Jerry, Wed, 8 Aug 2001 05:32:39 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
A lot depends on where the smoke is coming from. If the AC clutch hasn't burned up, then Val's recommendation of pulling the AC fuse is right on. That will keep the AC clutch from engaging and turning the compressor. What you don't want to do is have the compressor turn. If the compressor siezes up, it'll burn out the AC clutch, causing LOTS of smoke and may very well take out the serpentine belt. You can't drive your year car without the serpentine belt - you'll lose the water pump and power steering.
If the smoke was coming from the AC clutch and it's already toasted, you may want to have the car towed.
Simple test - pull the AC fuse (30 amp), start the car, and watch the engine. First off, the AC clutch shouldn't engage - you should see the center part of the clutch stationary while the belt part turns happily around it. If the center part is turning, or you see or smell smoke, then you should have the car towed. That indicates the clutch has failed engaged. But if it idles fine for about 5 minutes, then you should be perfectly fine to drive the car. Just remember to tell the guys at the shop you pulled the fuse - tape it to the steering wheel with a note. Otherwise they'll figure the problem was a missing fuse.
good luck!
