An evaporator is, essentially, a radiator. If it is truly 'bad', then a
used replacement is an extremely good idea because they usually
last forever, if not more! You could probably get the whole plastic
housing, with the evaporator included, at a salvage yard, for a
fraction of what you'd have to pay for a new one from a dealer.
They are not that difficult to remove. A DIY'er could do it in a
few hours, IF the present system has no working fluid remaining.
And I really question whether the evaporator is leaking - it would
seem more reasonable to suspect the supply and return lines,
where they connect into the evaporator. Anyway, if your supply
and return lines are ok, and the evaporator does have a leak, then
I would figure $150 in used parts. If it's the supply/return lines, then
I would get new ones - probably a little more than $150, don't know
exactly. Get at least two other diagnoses/prices - it's never a good
idea to just use one!
