Thanks for your help. I put in an inquiry at my local independent saab mechanic to see if he could do the tests.
In the meantime I'll answer some of your (possibly rhetorical) questions.

It cranks over fast, so I guess that rules out the solenoid, etc. explanation.

It's always slower than I like these days. It's worst when its both hot out and the car is warm (driven in the last several hours). If its hot or and hasn't been driven in 8 hours, say since I got to work, then it can still be extra difficult to start. But perhaps not as difficult as if it had been driven 2 hours or less ago.
