replacement.
Car #1 ('95 Aero):
As with many here, I also had a broken exhaust manifold stud. Yes, we all know which one usually goes first.
There was some burnt mark at the exhaust manifold but I have never been able to see or detect any leak during a cold start. I decided to fix it anyway.
I took this to an indy and he charged me 3.5 hr (at $54/hr) to replace all studs, the gasket was only $12 and the studs I think were about $10 total.
So this job0 came to just over $200, a reasonable price given the labor involved.
He didn't put in the long studs. He said he preferred the short studs than the original long ones and he hasn't gotten any repeat problem with short studs that he replaced for a few years now. I have no reason to doubt his expertise at this point given the work was nicely done.
Car #2 ('92 9000S):
I was trying to replace this car but thus far have not been able to find an equally good condition late model 9K so I decided to fix whatever that's left to fix on this one. I knew the heater core was leaking, dealer did not replace heater core during ABS recall.
The same indy charged me 3 hr labor and $240 for the core, plus the usual coolant replacement flush etc. So the cost of heater core replacement was under $450. Not cheap but I think is a reasonable price for the job, again given the labor involved.
For anyone living in mid to north NJ, I would highly recommend this shop in Bound Brook (Swedish Car Service, 261 West Union Ave, Bound Brook, 732-564-1000). I have no financial stake or connection to this shop but just a satisfied customer.
He is also in the Mechanics list for NJ at this site.
