Changing Battery-solution or symptom of other probs..

Hi folks-- I have a 91 9kturbo that I've had for 3 years. About once a week the car is totally dead and I have to get a jump from a friend with a VW passat (yea-he gives me grief...). When I turn my lights on the pictograph erroneously tells me I have faulty brake lights (I got brake lights). Also, when I turn on the parking lights (middle setting on light toggle switch) they stay on EVEN when the car is off. Sometimes the car is just dead. When I get it running the volt metre goes from 8.5 to 13.4 and it generally will fire after a days work--then be dead the next morning after driving home. I am going to get a new battery--BUT am I fixing the problem or just going to go thru batteries?? Any electrical troubleshooting is WELCOME THANKS
