My 93 Aero went into limp home for the first time back in May. It happened upon restarting, after only 5 minutes from a cold start. The check engine light also triggered. It flashed code 5, (throttle potentiometer? See Townsend site). Upon blowing and sucking on the hoses at the bulkhead mounted valve and unplugging and reconnecting the wiring harness at the throttle body, limp home went away for at least a month. After a few restarts, the check engine light went and stayed off during this time.
When limp home returned, it was when the engine bay was hot and either did not trigger the check engine light or the light went off after several restarts. After about 5 such events over about two weeks, I headed for a distant Saab dealer. Within 15 miles of the dealership on a warm morning, for the first time ever, limp home triggered while the car was moving. Upon shutting off and restarting, it would disappear but return within minutes.
The dealer's Tech II or I-Sat indicated a faulty throttle body that was to cost $270. As a matter of routine, they would replace the bleeder, control and check valves ($84, $100 and $29, respectively). I approved the repairs along with a SRS sensor, all for just over $700. After they kindly replaced vacuum hoses (good quality) and these valvel, the technician found out that the $270 throttle body was the wrong type for my car. The right part was $710(their mistake in first looking up the part). Pointing this out to me, I refused the repair ($430 over the original estimate) and decided to limp back home. But to get me to keep the valves they had already installed, they told me that these probably would partially solve the problem. Really, three weeks later, it seems that the valves and hoses have done the trick. Saved $430??
I told you all of that to tell you this, you may only need new vacuum hoses. Next, if any of the valves are leaking, they can probably be cleaned with compressed air and lubricated with plain motor oil.
Worth a try, isn't it. Let me know if you tried these and how they worked.
