Your advice is correct, but I wasn't looking for a bargain in a flood damaged vehicle, my point was how do you know one isn't processed through several states to disguise flood damage? What are the dealer's obligations for disclosure? Does it vary state by state? Is this a Federal disclosure issue.
Let me refine my thought. In the old days you could go to a dealer and tell him that when he got a particular car coming in on trade, give me a call. The dealer was happy to work with you because it helped him make a new car sale knowing he could be flexible with the trade in price. You had some confidence in buying a used car because the dealer sold and serviced it. I've done this for years.
I find that the business model for used cars has changed. With the growth in leasing, used cars are not being returned to dealers at lease end, but are being returned to non traditional resellers, the banks and finance companies. As they are not dealers, they hire third party auction sites to move them out of their inventory and into the market. In an industry not normally noted for really caring about repeat sales (after all, how often do you buy a car) the banks and auctioneers and the non-factory dealers have even less incentive to protect their reputations. Plus, if you watch the classifieds, there appear to be individuals who frequently sell 2 to 3 cars periodically; are the buying in auctions and patching things up for sale?
My question is how do we protect ourselves from this situation; I'm looking for something beyond the carfax pablum. Any factory support for a car's history?
Thanks in advance.
