I purchased my '91 9kt at 60k and the chain failed at 65k and bent 4 valves in the process. I have read posts that stated that some '90 and '91 models were manufactured with substandard timing chains, resulting in a higher failure rate among these years.
Also, because of posts I have read on the TSN BB and an increase in my chain noise, I am in the process of renewing the BS gears and chain at 115k. I am glad that I am doing so, as the BS gears and associated idler sprockets were very scalloped and thin. My uneducated guess is that they would have failed within 15-20k based on how sharp and thin the teeth were on the BS gears.
I have read many letters proclaiming that chains last until 150k and plus; however, most of these letters are from owners with 2 litre motors that have no balance shaft gears.
My opinion is that Saab owners with 2.3 litre engines, especially earlier 2.3 engines, should have the work done as soon as the chain noise increases noticably. From what I understand, when the BS gears fail they ruin the main bearings and essentially take out the engine. Even though the process of replacing the gears, chains, tensioners and guides is costly (usually $700 - $800 in parts alone!) the alternative is far more costly.
I am waiting for a new crank gear (also worn) to reassemble my engine, but I expect to have things up and running by this weekend. For me, the expense is certainly worth the piece of mind to renew a car that I plan to drive to 200k plus.
