I also have a '96 CS. This car operates with an OBD-2 setup which is different from most of the information given in the posts which reference OBD-1 specs. What you need is an OBD-2 reader (I got a SunPro at Canadian Tire for about $250 CDN - you could probably get one from AutoZone or similar). The data port for the reader is right below the steering column, on the bottom dash panel. You plug your reader in, turn the ignition key to the run position and read away. The SunPro reader also allows you to erase the codes and thus turn off the Check Engine message.
Yes, by running Bosch plugs you will consistently activate the light and when you get to read the codes you should see a P0300 or P0301 code which indicates a random misfire or misfire in cylinder 1. Actually in my car, the Bosch standard or Plus4 plugs run better than the correct NGKs, but always activate the light due to the fact that the plugs are also utilized as engine sensors.
I have found that by having the reader, although relatively expensive, it pays for itself in saving you from annoying trips to the dealer to just get the light reset. Also the reader is usable in any other '96+ car using the same OBD-2 spec (GM and Ford are different spec, I believe; but all Euro cars use the same).
