My (newstyle?) bypass valve [below] does not look like and/or is not situated in the same place as described in Quasi web site. Perhaps that is why you could not find it?
I think the hard part is getting the bypass valve off. Last time I tried (not in order to replace it, but to enable the plastic air intake duct to move so that I could take out the air filter for replacing, let alone put in a new one), after loosening the straps, I could not get the hoses to budge, and just wound up letting the dealer do the air filter replacement.
Before replacing the valve or putting in an open K&N filter, I would probably want to know:
Besides having money to burn, is there any compelling performance or economic reason to get the more expensive dismantle-able valves like Forge (stratmosphere.com) or like what Abbott is selling?
What kind and how difficult are the modifications necessary to install an open filter a) in the engine bay, and b) in a cooler and more protected part of the car. I wish Swedish Dynamics web site would talk about this in more detail. The alterations probably aren't *that* straightforward or "minor", otherwise SD would have listed "Air Intake" as an upgrade for all 9000s model years. As it is, SD only lists "Air Intake" as an upgrade for 1986-1989.
$69.95 for the open filter kit from SD...is this the best price?
