I would start just by replacing the rear speakers - you can go coaxial or get components. The rears are just for fill, unless you drive from the back seat. You can improve substantially on rear imaging by locating your separate tweeters elsewhere, but you are still limited by the aiming of the stock woofers for the midrange. I thought it was a pretty easy job to do, at least if you stay with the same size speaker, though the nuts that hold the mounting plate on can be a little tricky.
Your amp, if it has speaker level inputs, and also preferably a crossover, can fairly easily be hooked up to power a subwoofer. You would still need to run a power cable to the battery, though, but that's not too difficult if it's only the one amp, you could use 8 or even 10 gauge.
On my web page you can see that indeed, I have located my subwoofer in front of the tool panel, and you also can see that I've put my rear tweeters up by the reading lights. Both were a huge improvement! The problem in the 9K is that the trunk is not really sealed, so unless you put an enclosure around the rear woofers (and I seem to recall somebody saying that Saab did this at one point), a lot of the bass potential from good woofers in the back will be lost.
Anyhow...
