If you were driving it all day and it wouldn't start at night, either the battery wasn't getting charged (unlikely unless you saw the battery symbol light up with the engine running) or you have another problem.
The battery should always have close to a full charge in it, if your alternator is doing it's job, you shouldn't have to run it for any unusual amount of time. That said, if you were driving around all day in 90+F weather, stop and go driving, with the A/C blasting on high, headlights on, and stereo cranked, you may not have had much if any current left over for the alternator to charge the battery. On hot days, I watch the voltage reading carefully and if it starts dipping below about 12.9 or 12.8V on a continual basis, it's time to start shutting down unneeded electrical systems, start with the headlights during the day of course!
You may have a problem with your main battery ground cables - one of mine was badly frayed after 10 years, and caused symptoms quite similar to a dead battery. It can never hurt to at least clean all the terminals at the ends of the battery ground cables (also the little ones that meet the big on behind the battery), as well as clean the battery posts.
Good luck!
