... see my post a couple of days ago about remembering to pump up the brakes when you've had the calipers off!
Anyway, I believe the 3-wire sensor has two heater wires and a signal wire, with signal ground being made through the metalwork. The 4-wire sensor has a separate signal ground that should result in a more accurate signal at the ECU.
Did you have to take the downpipe off? I did. I also found the locking nuts that hold it on had lost their locking properties. While trying to get my car through its MOT, I realised one of the nuts had fallen off. I coughed up for three new ones. Not very expensive. They're copper. Nylon locking nuts would last about 5 seconds, about the same length of time that the copper nuts stay looking like copper before they turn black.
I followed Bill's advice and used a 1/4" drive T-bar and 13mm socket to get to the rear nut. It's fiddly, but this does it, even on the JT downpipe which leaves even less room than the standard one. The front one I do with an open-ended spanner - you'll probably get a socket or ring spanner on it with the standard downpipe. I get a ring-spanner on the lower one - the spanner just touches the radiator as I swing it.
Be sure to get it good and tight and it's probably a good idea to retighten it after running it for a few days. Mine was responsible for the whistle/whoosh noise I was complaining about, and it all started a couple of months after I had the downpipe off to change the sensor. My local Saab dealer says they re-tighten these at every service and it is not uncommon for them to leak.
One tip is to lubricate the joint with oil before assembly so it pulls onto the turbo evenly. The oil will burn off after a few seconds of running. If the studs have started to unscrew themselves from the turbo, it is well worth putting some effort in to screw them back in again, as if they protrude through the nuts too much, you'll have trouble getting a socket on them. You'll have to do this with the downpipe off. Use two nuts locked together on the end of the stud.
