This is a good method that I've also used, but I've gone a step further to insure visibility to the outside, which can still be a problem in some cases. Since the left mirror is not wide-angle like the right, I've installed a small stick-on "fisheye" mirror on the bottom right of the left outside mirror, and this arrangement gives me complete visibility.
These mirrors are available in several configurations at any auto-parts store. I have the rectangular model, which I think is best--although I've had the small, round type on previous cars. The latter is less effective because you see too much sky, which is useless unless you are on the lookout for police in helicopters--but a drawback when the sun is in the wrong position. On those, I placed a strip of opaque tape to block out that area.
The only drawback (minor) is that when shifting your attention from the wide-angle to the regular mirror, your eye must shift focus, which takes a millisecond or two.
