but then failed catastrophically. However, tuners say the auto tranny is capable of taking more power and torque than the 2.3 turbo produces as standard. I probably have 210bhp plus an automatic. I think you could drive as hard as you like without straining the transmission as much as I do in normal, enhusiastic driving. However, you can lighten the load by shifting carefully.

I ease the throttle to allow up-shifts to happen when I want them (which is sensible anyway) and avoid savage kick-down and full-throttle downshifts, unless I've completely lost it or just feel like chucking the car about a bit. On winding country roads I stick it in 3rd, but this is mostly to avoid stupid changes in corners, or coming out of them. In town I often do the same thing.

American auto trannies are quite tolerant of sloppy changing from, say, forward into reverse when parking, but with your Saab it makes sense to stop the car first.

If you've just taken the car on, you would do well to have another fluid change pretty soon, because you don't know what the previous owner did. Then change fluid at regular intervals - 15K sounds good. If you have shifting problems, like slow or clunky changes, don't ignore them but have the box checked out: there are plenty of adjustments and repairs/replacements that can be made without removing the box.

Apparently more auto 9000s were sold in the states than manuals, so although they're complex by nature they're not rocket science and the knowledge should be out there (famous last words...) There is also plenty of detailed troubleshooting info on the Townsend site (see Sponsors list).

Finally, you might find it helps to fit a rising-rate fuel pressure regulator. Sounds silly, but it was a very cheap way to better performance on my normally-aspirated car.
