How do I check if there is sufficient refridgerant in the A/C

system of my 1993 9000 CST, which has 134A.? I removed the aquarium cover by the windshield, looking for a small sight glass, but all I can see is what appears to be a small box made of some heavy plastic with the two A/C lines running into it. My compressor runs, but squinting into this box I don't see anything.
The compressor goes around, air blows in the car, but it is not cold.
Can I buy gauges myself and check the pressure at the compressor where the two plastic caps are? I subscribe to ALLDATA, which has the specs on this.
I'm determined to figure this out myself. Thanks.
