It can definately be the ground. The bad ground doesn't 'drain' the battery - it just prevents the current in the battery from getting to where it needs to be. A bad connection is a resistance, usually due to corrosion. When current flows through a resistance, it heats up, and with most things, the hotter, the higher the resistance. So the bad connection passes just enough current to turn the engine once or twice, gets hot, and the now increased resistance is too much to allow the starter to turn.
Lights and accessories take current - 10 or 15 amps - but that is nothing compared to the current required to start an engine - 300 or more amps.
Try this - get yourself a good hand-held voltmeter. Set it to volts, and put the positive lead on the ground post of the battery, and the negative lead to a clean metal spot on the chassis or engine. Turn the headlights on - there will now be a small but measureable voltage difference between the battery post and the chassis. If it is only 5 or 10 millivolts (mv - thousandth of a volt), the battery cable ground is probably pretty good. If you see more than 100 millivolts, the ground can use cleaning.
