Two separate questions about my '91 9000 CD Turbo with 60K miles.
1) I've noticed a knocking sound that seems to come from the right front part of the engine compartment. It happens when in speed up/slow down mode in stop and go traffic traveling between say 35 and 55 mph. When I deccelerate to say below 35 mph and then hit the accelerator again I hear a single knock when the speedometer passes say 40 mph. After that point the car is fine and performs beautifully and there are no further knocks or hiccoughs.
Thus you typically don't hear the sound at all while driving in the city or in faster flowing highway traffic. Any thoughts on what this could be and how to diagnose or fix the problem?
2) As eventually happens to anyone who parks their car in a NYC garage, my car has been damaged by my garage. They agreed to pay for the damage (crumpled corner of the rear bumper). I provided them with two estimates, one for $850 and the other for over $1200. Do these sound reasonable for replacing the rear bumper of the car? I think the estimates varied so greatly because one shop thought there was some minimal underlying damage to the car itself (i.e. not just the bumper). I'd like to try to find a cheaper alternative to fixing the problem (or perhaps straightening rather than replacing the current bumper) as I've been getting a lot of "the cheque's in the mail" run-around from the garage, and also it seems that their policy is simply to hand a cheque to the owner of a damaged car for the lower amount of 2 written estimates. Thus if I eventually either give up and have to pay for the damage myself, or receive a cheque for $850, in either case it would seem to my advantage to have the car repaired for less if possible. Any thoughts on body shops that might be able to do this, or the pros and cons of going down this road? Is it possible for me (a novice) to get a bumper from a junkyard and do the replacement myself?
Your thoughts are most welcome.
thanks,
Marc
