Hi Lu - oh keeper of the secrets of electronics

The replacement fan controller slowly but surely burned out during my trip last weekend. First the low speed went, then a day later, the medium speed. Then, a day later, the fan would no longer run.
I checked the voltage at the fan. It runs 12V when I jump the controller connecter and the fan runs. The fan housing looks almost new. I pulled and reconnected the fan power and temp sensor. All the wiring I can see looks pretty new. No kinks, no exposed anything. I don't have an amp-meter, just voltage/ohms, so I'm not sure how I would check on how many amps the fan is pulling. Advice?
I checked the voltage at the ACC controller and the fan controller connecter on all fan speeds. While they all match and are within spec, I did notice that if I did this just after turning on the car, the voltage would jump around for a bit before settling. There is one fault code from the ACC Unit: AU - which Townsand says is fan controller or blower.
I am suspecting that the ACC unit has a short that goes away after some component or another warms up from current flow (low speed circuit?) which is frying the transister and am currently looking for a used replacement. Expensive bugger new (about 1000USD - ouch).
In the meantime, on the very off-chance that I somehow got a bad replacement Fan controller, I have ordered a replacement transister (actually two, in case I screw it up the first time) from Radio Shack. I noted that that transister can handle up to 1000V. No wonder it needs such a big heatsink to maintain a piddly 5V max.
I also have the blower fan hot wired (heavy gauge jumper in pins 3&4 at the controller connecter), so if I need to run it, I just put the 30A fuse in before I start the car.
I'm somewhat of a novice on electronics, but my learniong curve seems to be pretty good, and I'm willing to dive in. Any advice would be helpful.
