I've found a 1993 Saab 9000CSE Turbo for sale at a small local used car dealer. It has 99,000 miles and seems to be in good overall shape (they have absolutely all records...it checked out great with CarFax). The car was advertised for $6980, I called up and they told me that some guy just traded it in and that it needed a new clutch. I went in to see the car, and there were no real surprises...I took it out for a test drive and indeed the clutch sucked. Every thing else seemed alright. About ten minutes into the drive we stopped with the motor running and got out to see what it sounded/smelled like while idling. There was a distinct sulphuric odor which my friend attributed to a bad catalytic converter. I got back and asked the guy what he could do for price and he was like "well, it'll cost 2 or 300 to put a new clutch in..." I told him I had $5500 to spend and he said call back monday. So I called back today and he said he could do $5900 with a new clutch. I know it's going to cost a hell of a lot more than 2-300 for a new clutch. So here are my questions:
Do you think they'll pull some B.S. temporary clutch fix?
Is this catalytic converter problem serious? If it's been left unfixed for a while, what could it damage? How can I tell what stage this problem is in?
Does this car sound alright? What else should I look for?
This seems like a good deal, please help me out.
Thanks,
Nate
