Hello everyone,
I have a 1996 9000CSE Turbo 5-speed with 101K miles. The other night, I accelerated hard on an on-ramp, and then while cruising on the highway I noticed that the car behaved strangely. It lurches when I let off or get back on the gas, much worse than I've ever felt before. Also, when I depress the clutch and take it out of gear, the engine speed didn't immediately decrease, it held somewhere around 2500-3000rpm for a few seconds before falling.
When I got off the highway, it didn't idle well - it surged to 2000+rpm, then fell back to almost 500rpm where it almost died before surging to 2000+rpm again. This vicious cycle of idling would take 2-3 seconds before repeating over and over. I got home okay, and shut the engine off and then restarted it. It immediately began the same idle fluctuation. I then left it until the next morning. When I started it the next morning, it started immediately, but hovered at a near-death idle speed of around 500rpm before surging to 2000rpm and staying there. I didn't wait to see if the fluctuation started, I shut it off immediately. Examination of the engine, especially around the throttle body, didn't reveal anything obviously wrong like an unconnected vacuum hose. When driving home that first night, I still had plenty of power, so I wasn't in limp-home mode. I haven't attempted to drive it since.
Any ideas? My thoughts range from sticking or stuck throttle body and/or AIC valve to blown head gasket or plugged cat.
Thanks so much in advance!
John
