.....I had an idle air control valve fault (on a 9K 2l 1988 non turbo) which gave similar symptoms along with poor fuel consumption. This fault appeared on driving away from a SAAB dealer after a service (suspicious) This was replaced by the dealer for about 120 UKPounds although looking at the job now I would do it myself if I had to again. Its the Bosch-made cylinder sitting in front of the manifold housing above the rear cam cover. On pipe enters the end of it from before the throttle valve and then another leaves at 90 deg to it and goes back in after the throttle valve - it controls idle speed when throttle valve is closed and keeps the tickover steady when a/c, fan etc might kick-in. If it fails to regulate then the idle is variable and when driving along it allows more air to pass than your right foot is asking for (via the throttle valve) hence the apparent slight loss of control. (I asked my SAAB dealer to put the old one in the trunk when they replaced it. On examination it was dated 85 despite the car being an 88 - Hmmmm! On opening it up (a terminal procedure) its just and electric motor with a valve on the end. The commutator was clogged up and preventing the motor from operating.)
Good luck. 9KCSE 1993 man (UK) 125000miles
