Couple things to consider Sam, first of all, yes, once you get used to driving a Saab, little else will do. And yes, they can be pretty expensive, but IME no worse than any other high end Euro marque, and considerably cheaper than a BMW or a Benz.

Nothing really stands out for 94 being a bad year or a good year...the one thing that is making your car need repairs is...it's 8 years old, and I would guess it's right around or has crossed over 100K miles, which is about the point that you can expect certain things to fail on 9K's, namely heater cores, motor mounts, crank pulley (it's also a harmonic balancer), water pumps, and if it's an auto trans, it could be on it's way out (seems more indicative of maintenance and driving style whether your auto lasts 50K miles or 200K), and if it's a manual, clutch hydraulics will begin to get weak. my 92 9KT has been thru all that between 107K and 115K miles.

Quasi has a great site for watching failure trends, some how to's, and maintenance info.

Not to paint too grim of a picture, but that's what you can expect if your car is typical...on the plus side, change your oil and the engine will be the least of your worries. Saabs seem to be VERY maintenance sensitive, let something go for too long and it will cost you. Maintain them religiously and they just seem to go forever.

Other things to consider; it's ALWAYS cheaper to fix a used car than it is to buy a new car. That might be hard to swallow when you're looking at thousand dollar repair bills all the time, but one thing I would suggest is you start doing at least the maintenance yourself and tackling any repairs you feel comfortable doing. This board is a GREAT resource and if it hasn't been answered already, there are some very sharp, experienced mechanics and owners out there who are very willing to help. 9.5 times out 10 just searching the board or archives answers whatever question I have. My keyboard looks pretty grubby from all the times I've come in from a project in the garage to look up some info on TSN :)

Regarding the current repairs you mentioned, for the crankshaft seal, how badly is it leaking? Since you mentioned the engine has to come out for it to be replaced i'm assuming you mean the back seal, by the bell housing. Well, consider while the engine is out having other things done, like a new clutch (assuming you have a clutch) and hydraulics. Another thing to consider is (and normally i don't recommend band aids) one of the new 'higher mileage' engine oils that have a seal conditioner/stop leak as part of the mix, or adding a stop leak. All they do is cause the seals to swell up, and they will still fail before too much longer, but it will slow down all but the worst leaks and keep friends from calling your car the Vaaldez :D

Find a good tool store in your area or online, and start getting what you need to do things yourself. A few hundred dollars in tools will get you started pretty well and will more than pay for itself within the first year if you use them.
