This subject is still being argued, and you may very well see both sides in response to this question. The consensus elsewhere is that an MBC is safe provided you use it wisely. That means restraining yourself from setting it to the highest boost pressure possible. Also, you need to use high octane gas. Don't use it if you already have any engine trouble.
Don't bother spending the money on Abbott's valve. You can get a pretty good one from Dawes Devices for something like $35 shipped. It doesn't have the third hose connection like Abbott's does, but this is unnecessary. Higher quality valves can be found -- Hallman, TurboXS, etc. -- but they're only really necessary if you're trying to extract the maximum possible power out of your engine. For your application, Dawes's vavle should be fine.
