Hard Brake Pedal and no Brake Fluid light at startup

The car is a '96 9k CSE non-turbo with 169k miles on it, with all maintenance services done at the dealership. I've described the issue in a nutshell - the pedal is very hard but the brakes seem to work fine, and the Brake Fluid warning light does not light up at startup. I'll be lubing the caliper slider pins and bleeding the brakes this weekend (I looked in the reservior this afternoon and boy is that fluid black), and I'll see about pulling the warning light bulb although I really don't want to pull the dash apart. The ABS pump runs at key on for just a couple of seconds so I think it's OK. The accumulator only seems to take a couple of pumps to discharge, though, which worries me. Other than the caliper sliders and fluid, what should I be looking at?
