Hello, all! I've been reading posts for the last three hours, and wanted to throw something in.
I bought a 1986 9000 turbo 5 speed at the beginning of August, after months of fascination with SAABs that started when I briefly dated a girl who owned a 92 9000t. With 148000 miles, it drives smoothly and gracefully, and once I get onto the freeway, it feels quiet but strong! (at least by my standards -- for the last seven years my car was a 1979 subaru wagon, with a top speed of maybe 70 mph)
Anyway, I do have some questions, and I'm hoping that some of the sagely folk who inhabit this place might be willing to shed some wisdom in my direction. I'd like to maintain this car well, and do as much as I can by myself, rather than have mechanics do it for me.
1) The trip computer is odd -- sometimes its average MPG is accurate, sometimes it's too high. (like 40 mpg.) Is this just a flaky computer? Are there any sensors that could be cleaned?
2) I don't know how to listen for transmission whine. I do hear some kind of quiet high hum while I'm going 55-65 mph, in either 4th or 5th. Is this it, or is this just a regular car sound? The engine seems quite healthy, so if the tranny is in good shape too, I'm one happy dude.
3) The spark-plug gapping is only 0.6 - 0.7 mm, according to the owner's manual. Is this right? I pulled the old plugs, and they had maybe twice that, but they were quite worn. Also with plugs, I replaced the NGK's with some AC/Delco RapidFire plugs which Schucks recommended. But I have this nagging feeling that it was a bad idea. Any comments?
4) I did a compression test on the engine, and all four cylinders were between 180 and 187 psi. These numbers seem pretty good -- almost too good?
5) Would anyone be willing to recommend a good maintenance book for this car?
6) the darn reservoir for the windshield washer fluid keeps leaking. The pump enters the reservoir through a rubber ring, but maybe the rubber has grown hard, so it doesn't seal well. I tried using a bit of grease to make a seal, but it didn't work. Any advice out there, shy of buying a new reservoir?
Thanks in advance,
Devon
