Fuel economy good (most 850 T are automatic), performance very good (full 850 T is 222 hp, GLT is 190 hp, automatic only)... reliability can be iffy... I'm not aware of too many problems that actually strand the car, but there are definitely a lot of small things that go wrong. One not so small thing that goes wrong on every single one is the a/c condenser... parts $350, labor $800, if you don't do it yourself - and it's a b*tch to do, the whole dash has to come out, and it takes about a day. Also, early cars ('93 and '94) are definitely best avoided, '95s are better, but if you can afford it, get a model after the 1996 MY facelift. The second facelift to S70 is a nicer car still, but obviously getting into a nice bit more money, especially with a Turbo. My girlfriend has a 1998 S70 non-turbo, and mechanically it has been fine, but a lot of silly little things have gone wrong, like door latches not opening, occasional power windows not opening, power antenna getting stuck up or down, fuel tank door getting stuck shut (picture this happening when the fuel light is on in the middle of nowhere...), and I guess the a/c on the S70 is no better than the 850, just they are not yet old enough to manifest the problem... Personally, my 1997 9000 CS cost about $6,000 less than I would have paid for a '98 S70 GLT, and I much prefer the SAAB to the Volvo, I doubt there is an S70 in existence that I would like more than a 9000.
