the age old method for determining noises from a belt area is to take a long piece of wooden dowel or a thin metal tube (and i'm talking like 1/4" diameter max.) Now then, VERRRRRY carefully use this as a stethoscope by placing one end close to (close, not IN) your ear and the other end on the suspected component. I can't stress enough how careful you need to be, if you slip and the dowel gets tangled in the belt, it won't be good, for your or the car or possibly both. that being said, if you pick a good angle and pay attention to what you're doing, you can almost always tell the source of any belt driven accessory noise.
