A knocking noise is pretty scary. It's easy to determine if you mechanic is right (which makes me wonder why he hasn't tried it.) Just remove the serpentine belt from the car a start it up. If the noise is still there then you can rule out all belt driven accessories. Of course don't run it very long as the water pump is driven by the same belt. I agree with your suspicions on the timing chain, mostly because your car is a '91 which probably has the notorious unhardened sprockets and your reaching about the mileage for them to go bad. I would use a piece of hose, a ratchet extension or a mechanics stethescope to get a better idea where the noise is coming from. If it is defeintly from the chain side of the engine then you may just have to bite the bullet and have the chains and sprockets replaced. It's an expensive job, so make sure that is where the noise is coming from the chain area. Certainly rule out the accessories and a rod knock first. Let us know what it ends up being.
