Help! smoke coming from underneath Saab

Yesterday my car stopped going forward, it was still idling, while I was driving it. A few minutes later it started smoking as though something was on fire underneath the car. I couldn't tell if it was an electrical or oil smell. It lasted for about 20 minutes (it was raining so I don't know if that helped end the burning). I had it towed to the mechanic. By the time the tow truck came the car would turn over but not idle either. The mechanic has only begun to look at it but he said that the "air flow meter"? was shot but he didn't think that that would account for the smoke. The smoke was grey not blue or black and it smelled very strong and bitter... so that even though it had stopped burning before the tow truck came, the driver could still smell it. Does anyone know what happened to my 1991 CD turbo manual transmission? Never got the A/C problems solved, by the way. All parts replaced but the ACC unit wasn't sending the signal. Replaced the ACC with a used one which caused the battery to drain when the car was shut off. Also, the used ACC turned on the A/C but it only worked for 3 weeks. So we put the old one back in. This is my only car so I am ready to switch to a more reliable car but with the same performance (when my car works it is fantastic on the road or highway)but level of maintenance is too high for someone who can't work on it herself. Thanks again for advice.
