Bob--my 94 9k cs (non turbo) has about 80k miles and maintenance has been running $1-$2k/year. I think this is about par, and as long as it doesn't get over $2k I figure it's cheaper than a new car.
My repairs have included
--new clutch and muffler at 50k, $1500 (clutch probably due to early overuse on my part and also the fact that the car was a demo for the first 5k miles--I have mended my ways)
--a bunch of hoses and stuff, 70K, ~$800
--new DI cassette at 80k, ~$450
--new tires, maybe at 60k, ~$400
--dead alarm system around 75K, ~$150 to disable it
and then routine maintenance.
Right now it has a slightly leaky heater core and there is something funky with the ACC, but I think the ACC thing is minor. (Heat works, AC works, but sometimes the car can't get the right one to go on...)
The car has never left me high and dry, though sometimes it is annoying to take it for repairs even though I _don't_ commute with it.
It feels just as solid as a brand-new Jetta wagon, it carries more, and I don't have to worry much about theft.
