I'm worried about this cost issue too. My new SAAB (1986 9000T) seems like a wonderful car, but too expensive maybe. The previous owner of my car paid $9000 over 4 years. Perhaps I'm too poor for this car. But I see that as downpayment on land or a small house, or a year of not having to work.
On the other hand, the previous owner paid a shop to do everything, and they sometimes overcharged her (e.g. a full hour's labor to replace the steering fluid reservoir, and $126 for the reservoir, which is a dumb piece of plastic.) So you can probably get away with a lot cheaper if you do your own work, and find your own parts. Right now I'm just enjoying learning how to do some of the maintenance myself. If maintenance takes up too many weekends, and too much money, you might be seeing a picture of my car in the classifieds.
Also, I'm intending to keep my old car just for around-town driving, and save the SAAB (1986 9000T) for highway driving. (Or dates.)
