Bill
the firm who are converting my wife's '89 900S 16V to lpg are Tamar Tractors/Tamar Country cars, St Ive, Liskeard, Cornwall (halfway between Liskeard and Callington. They have been in the lpg conversion business over 40yrs. After the success with running my 9000 (which had been converted about 2.5yrs before I bought it) we have decided to convert hers especially as we have just had the timing chain replaced and at the same time the gearbox rebuilt to cure oil leaks. At 205,000 miles the engine is in tip top condition. The cylinder head was replaced about 35,000 miles ago, no wear in the bores or anywhere. The gearbox technician said that there was no wear in the gearbox at all so we decided to keep it.

The kit is based around BRC components (Vaporiser and ECU). It is open loop system (as the 900S had Bosch K-jetronic injection and no lambda probe) so nice and simple. Tamar tractors have a state of the art gas analyser (Petro/LPG/CNG + something else) so tune ups should be no problem. After chatting it through with the technicians (and my wife) we have gone for a cylindrical tank behind therear seats. Unfortunately the spare wheel well in a Classic 900 is very shallow and we could only get a 35l tank in there. So we have a 120l Stako tank and pre-made frame behind the rear seats (which still fold flat) which will give 96l of useable lpg. The 'Dutch bayonet' filler has been cut into the bodywork about 20cm back from the petrol filler (and correctly vented), which looks very neat. The vaporiser is mounted on the LH of the engine bay with only about 25cm of gaseous lpg pipe run to the mixer (in line with the inlet manifold). I think they have put a anti-blowback device in just after the AMM but need to ask them about that. The lpg ECU and injector emulators are all mounted in the LH wing alongside the SAAB ECU where it is nice and dry. It is a very neat installation allround.

I am not sure if I will have to replace the rear springs or not - time will tell due to the extra weight, but it will proabbly be offset by a fuel tank with just a few litres kept in it (10 to cover the low fuel light level). I am looking forward to driving it. My 9000 CSE 2.3 Turbo auto with lpg at 30p/litre is costing less than 7p/mile to run. So even with independent lpg prices in East Cornwall of 35.25p or 34p/litre we are looking forward to some good economy.

When I get it home I will take some photos of it. If anyone is interested in photos of the 9000 installation I will post those as well.
