Clutch pedal pivots and spring

This weekend I pulled out the clutch pedal, welded and re-drilled the pivot point. It was worn out to an oval, causing way too much free play on the clutch pedal.
Also on my '88 there is a big spring that attaches between the firewall and the clutch pedal. It's attached to the pedal with a plastic pivot, that is also seriously worn out at 142K miles. What's the point of this extra spring anyway? The clutch feels fine without it.
