Martin,
I just put significantly more money into my also 1987 9000T this year, not only in upgrades, but also had the engine and clutch replaced, as you are considering. To me, it's certainly worth it, for several reasons.
Seeing how I have had fixed, or fixed myself, practically everything on the car, I know exactly what kind of shape it's in, and how much longer I can expect things to last, which is quite a while.
Sure, maybe I could buy a similar car for a similar amount of money to what I just spent, maybe even less, but then everything on it would be an unknown, and could fail at any time, starting the whole process over. And, my car is exceptionally clean in terms of lack of dents/rust/interior problems, etc, for the year and mileage.
As many people have said, it will always be cheaper to maintain a used car, than buy a new one or newer one. Some people get lucky, even with Saabs, and buy them super cheap and never have to do any work for a couple years and then sell it. I like to seriously research my car buying decision and only buy what I know I'll be happy with for many long years - coming up on six with my 9000. I've spent more on maintenance than the purchase price of the car, but this seems par for the course when you keep a car to over 150,000 miles and then several years after that (mine had 151,000 when I bought it).
Ah well anyhow...to me, it's worth it if you like the car, and if you'd rather deal with the devil you do know, rather than the devil you don't.
If you aren't happy with the car in whatever way..be it color combination, shape of the expensive stuff - body in particular, comfort of the seats, etc, certainly it's an opportunity to find something that suits your needs better. My car just happens to suit me perfectly, so why go to all the expense and trouble of looking for a new one and have a car payment each month..
