I've had Alpins, Blizzaks and Hakkas. I would rate them best to worst in this order. This Blizzaks, as you seem to be aware, wear down to an all-season tread, which I feel is a rip-off. They are mushy on dry roads, and the Alpins are better in all conditions.
Not surprising that your TCS wasn't very helpful. It only limits wheelspin when accelerating. I think you'll find the 9000 with Alpins to be a superb winter car.
