Garry seems on the money; also Mike. The handling is the best part
I own a 96 LPT 5 speed; 135,000 km.
This car has the original turbo but has had a new wastegate fitted (dumps at 106 kPa not 40) and saab suspension kit 400 102 521 which comprises 4 springs + dampers. You could investigate Koni options too but I prefer to stay genuine as much as possible. I do have Koni shocks on the back about 40% open. The suspension is about 80% of the way to an Aero (I have driven 7 of them; 1996-98); performance is better than 3 of the aeros and about the same as 3 of the other 4 and one was absolutely unbelievable but I think it had a special chip in it.
I run 205/60 tyres on the orig 15" rims. You can pump these up to 38psi and you get a pretty good ride / handle combo.
Benefits of this vs an Aero:
Cost of mods was A$2500. Cost to trade my car on a same year aero $15,000+
Cloth seats (yes I know the aero seats look cool but I stick to them in summer and they are redhot in shorts)
Baby seat and capsule fit in the back OK.
No sunroof (to bang head on)
No "turbo" badge, skirts or spoiler to tell policeman "Please follow me" or robbers "please steal me".
5 mm more ground clearance which is handy for country river crossings (i have been further in my 9k than many Outbacks).
No fog light to break on a kerb.
Can't get an Aero in sky blue which is my favourite saab colour
Downside:
It still isn't an Aero (that's why I drive one every time my local dealer has one for sale).
It doesn't have the turbo boost gauge to bounce under your nose when you put your foot down hard
