Toby,
If the driver's side door lock works properly, close everything up, and lock the door: HOLDING the key in the locked position for about 10 seconds.

If you hear the alarm <chirp> then you won't need that keyfob. All the controls are done through the lock. (See Townsend's site for explanations.)

Have you ever noticed a blinking red LED on your driver's side dash-speaker? It should start flashing about 60 seconds after the car is closed up and locked by the driver's side door. That's the alarm "armed" indicator. Easily seen at night, a little hand-shade might be required on a sunny day in the UK.

All 9k's after 90 or 91 had alarms as far as I know, Townsend's site is a savior. Removing the siren will be useless, because if triggered, the now-silent alarm will STILL kill the engine.

Removing the alarm.
The Alarm's controller is right under the passanger-side air vent. It is reached from below by removing that black fuzzy panel in the passenger's footwell. Reach up and aft towards a spot "right under the airvent" and you should find a small box on a nifty shelf.

The alarm ECU on your car may be a yellow box, which means its one of the SMART alarms, the kind that never forgets how it was calibrated or armed. I'd keep it unless so many things are screwed up and car-theft is nonexistent in your market.

Remove the 16-pin connector from the alarm. Use a ScotchLok connector to short together the two heavier-guaged wires at one end of the connector, and toss the control box in the trash. (Taping up the now exposed pins of that connector might be a wise move too)
