I got 30-38mpg on my 900. My 3 9000s have gotten 30-34mpg at 75mph. All were manual shift, and I have heard on this board that autos get maybe 5mpg less.
I think that all aspects of handling are much improved over the old 900. Cornering is much better, so is braking. The ride and handling are so good that my first impression was that the overall ride was very boring, and it was hard to keep the speed under 80mph because that speed feels like 65mph in a 900. I use cruise control to control my ticket uptake.
You may want to consider a '95+ 9k as I believe that their timing chain gears are a bit more reliable. Also manual tends to outlast auto.
