Ignition Gurus! DI or Crank Position Sensor? Help!

Car: 1990 9KT, 2 liter, 145K miles.
Car died the other day on the Interstate. Wouldn't restart until I had paid a tow bill. Once the at the indy garage, the car started. Drove it back home another 100 miles with no prob.
The car has on a couple of occasions, has stuttered when going down the road- like you had turned the ignition off, then back on. Does it once or twice then resumes running fine.
Can a DI failure totally shut down, then resume? The car runs and idles smoothly. Inspected the DI: Coils are clear and oil filled, Cyl 3 has a crack in the skirt that mates to the head and cyl 4 actually has a piece missing from the skirt.
Other posts suggest the crank position sensor failure because without its input, no spark at all. Correct? My SAAB dealer says that they replace 50 DIs to 1 sensor. Never had an intermittant sensor failure, when they die their dead and the car won't start.
Is the knock sensor involved here?
250 bucks for the sensor and 350 plus harness for a DI. They have to order the sensor. Ouch!
It just doesn't sound like a DI. I don't know. Any help would be great, since I have to get back home sometime. I don't feel like stranding my family in the middle of nowhere. Again.
