I'd bet the voltage regulator is shot. I just had mine replaced last week on my '94 9k CSE non-turbo. I tried from above (pull the false bulkhead and reach between the manifold and rear of the engine compartment, feel around behind the alternator - a mirror really helps to see it first) and one of the 2 screws started to strip, and there was no way to access it from below. I admitted defeat and took it to the shop and with the car on their lift confirmed that there was absolutely no way to reach it from below, at least on my car. I didn't have the commitment required to remove the alternator myself (power steering pump has to come out) so I had the shop R&R the voltage regulator by R&Ring the alternator. 4 hours labor ($62/hour) plus 1 hour to replace the leaky front main seal (I got ripped on this - it couldn't have taken more than 5 minutes with everything else out, but the "book" time for that was 2 hours) plus $150 for the belt tensioner (collapsed on removal of belt) plus miscellaneous - final total $535.
Bottom line - I strongly advise trying *really* hard to do it yourself - the voltage regulator was like $13. Good luck.
