The confusion in my original post arose because most European countries don't recognise the anomalous DOT 5 standard, and DOT 5.1 is often just shortened to "DOT 5" in conversation.
Blame your Department of Transport for the confusing designations. We do. (Whoops, I'm assuming you're from the US).
DOT 5.1 is a glycol-based (no silicone) synthetic fluid *specially* formulated for ABS, and is low-viscosity to aid brake modulation by those systems. It has a higher dry boiling point than DOT 4 and a significantly higher wet boiling point.
Try as I might, I can't locate brake fluid on the Lucas (now TRW) site, but here's a link to Comma DOT 5.1 brake fluid (from a UK oil company). The Lucas fluid is a slightly higher specification, I believe, but both exceed DOT 5.1.
My brakes feel great now with the new fluid and (probably more significantly) the steel brake hoses.
Wait till the EBC GreenStuff pads arrive (tomorrow, hopefully)!
