Refitting serpentine belt on '92

I've got a '92 9000 Turbo with A/C. Removed serpentine belt while replacing head gasket, and can't get it back on. The idler will not give me enough slack to get the belt on. There is a piston that holds the idler in place and the piston appears to have siezed. I can't move it more than about a centimeter anyway. Before I go out and replace the piston, anyone know of any stupid mistakes I may be making? Should I unbolt the A/C compressor, put the belt on, and try bolting it back on that way? I think it would stretch the belt a little but perhaps that's a good thing?
Thanks in advance,
Alex
P.S. - Don't try 25 PSI with stock head/gaskets/fpr. Copper gaskets and polyeurethane torque arm recommended. Turbo and exhaust manifold red hot. Coolant was boiling for 2 hours. Quite a bit of fun though.
