I definitely get more boost when I punch it in 3rd. The only way to be sure is to get a boost gauge with numbers on it. For this purpose, a cheap gauge will do - it doesn't have to be accurate, just repeatable. That way, you can compare boost more easily under different conditions.
A Trionic adaptation run every now and again is always a good idea (and can be fun).
