Well, the principle is that these check valves have a little rubber bit in them. There is a circular spring button that presses that rubber diaphragm against one of the circular hose openings (the fluid source). The circular spring button is perfectly shaped so that it presses the rubber perfectly, and forms an air tight seal, which does not allow fluid to return to it's source.
When washer fluid is pumped through, the spring allows the diaphragm to rise up, and allows fluid to pass through to the output, which is towards the left/right side of the the fluid input (on the same side of the diaphragm. But as soon as the washer fluid pump is switched off, the spring and diaphragm for the seal again, and prevent the fluid from flowing back.
The trouble is that this diaphragm gets eaten away after awhile, and either develops a hole, or disintegrates completely (which can clog jets). I noticed that this was happening when I was using this RainX winshield washer solvent...which is pink in colour, and when I pulled the check valves apart, all I found was sticky pink rubbery bits inside.
If you don't want to buy new check valves, you can fix them by replacing the rubber diaphragm with similar material, and carefully cutting it to fit the check valve (it's pretty obvious) - there's no sealing adhesive or anything, it just snaps together again. You can use a latex glove, or perhaps a latex condom (not the ribbed bit though) and carefully cut a circle out.
Hope this helps.
