9000 ZF automatic transmissions have a chronic problem with the "A" accumulator spring on the valve body. This accumulator controls the 3-4 upshift and may be related to your problem. The spring is made from an alloy that embrittles with flexing over time. I pulled mine out at 145K and could snap the spring in two with my fingers. It was deformed, but still working - I was lucky.
The "A" accumulator is located on the bottom of the valve body, which all things considered is not too difficult to access once you've removed the battery, holder, and transmission cover. You don't even have to drain the ATF. It is the larger of the two valves that are contained in an outboard housing that is bolted to main valve body. It is not necessary to unbolt the accumulator housing, just its endplate (be careful to keep track of the springs and plungers retained by the plate). The replacement spring is available from Eriksson Industries (they have a web site and are very good sources for ZF problems).
If all of this sounds a bit esoteric, leave it to a good transmission shop, but be aware, that it is very easy to get ripped off for a complete rebuild when a job like this should take no more than a couple of hours.
