... head gasket blow and burnt valve (not in a Saab and not both at the same time). Both made the car run rough at low speed, but smooth out at higher RPM. I assume the air is too viscous to leak away significantly through a small opening in the cycle time available at high RPM.
If it's a valve, it's more likely to be chipped or cracked than burnt, since it happened suddenly.
I'd be surprised if the timing chain was loose enough to jump without making a racket, but then I'm surprised rather often.
