5sp trans headed south - help?

I had the 87 9000 Turbo at the shop, and they're concerned that the syncros for 1st-2nd gears are going. The trans. shifts ok to me.
The clutch is fairly firm to depress. I'm new to all this, so I don't know how the clutch should feel. The clutch isn't feather easy to depress like in my VW Jetta.
Could this shop be mistaking a clutch hydraulic system filled with air bubbles, with failing syncros?
Lets say the syncros are heading downhill. If I refrain from doing any downshifting without double-clutching, and don't miss any shifts, will this transmission die on me in the near future? If its treated gently, could I expect to get 12k miles more out of it? The car has 191k miles. $3500 parts and labor to replace a trans in a $3000 car, is one big pill to swallow.
Thanks in advance,
Keith.
